About The Showroom...

This showroom will feature different RLOs from time to time. We welcome your comments on any aspect of the RLOs you find here.

UCeL is a UK HE collective, collaboratively creating, sharing and evaluating RLOs for health professional education. To find out more about UCeL, email info@ucel.ac.uk or contact us for more details.

What are RLOs?

Whilst there is currently much learned debate about what actually constitutes a RLO, many of the difficult sticking points (such as granularity and combinatoriality) are not very helpful in assisting teachers to create their own online resources. So UCeL has taken a decision to define a RLO for its own purposes. This is not to say that we have THE definitive solution - we merely offer A solution - which we are refining and evolving over time through a collective programme of action research and evaluation.

UCeL defines a RLO as: "a self-contained chunk of interactive web-based eLearning comprising a variety of media ingredients and designed to support a single learning objective". To assist RLO creation, UCeL has pioneered methods of unlocking content and offers a suite of tools and templates along with quality control and production methods. For more information and to download documentation, visit the UCeL resource centre

How To Use RLOs...

Because each RLO is designed to explore or explain a single concept and is stand-alone, they are simplicity themselves to use. Each RLO is composed of a number of web pages with text and an embedded multimedia file - usually a shocked Director movie or Flash animation. There is a narration to add an extra sensory dimension and activities and self-assessment aid comprehension and allow the learner to gauge whether they have understood the material.

There are two levels of navigation. The RLO can be navigated either sequentially through the series of pages or in any order or sequence for revision purposes. Each embedded movie also has a navigation bar where each section may be reviewed, a feature that should add extra functionality and aids user control.

What to expect ...

UCeL RLOs are made to high production standards. They are quality assured through a rigorous peer-review process and student evaluations are an important part of their development life-cycle.

We test our RLOs very thoroughly but we are not infallible! Please report any bugs, inconsistencies, typos or factual errors to the UCeL webmaster.

System Requirements...

All of these learning objects require Macromedia Shockwave to be installed. If you don't already have the Shockwave plugin installed you can download it for free.
