meeting participants

1. Introductions

2. Contextualising UCeL How do each of the participants fit in to the project? DL sets out the objectives of the meeting as an opportunity to tease out the basics of an adaptive statistical GLO template keeping in mind how best to serve those approaching statistics for the first time.

UCeL is a partnership between 6 UK Universities and has been producing RLOs in the Health sector. DL defined RLOs for the group as ' a self-contained chunk of interactive web-based learning comprising a variety of media ingredients that are combined to support a single learning objective. The group watched an example of an RLO 'Power and Sample Size' which included assessment and dynamic objects, the group also watched 'Sensitivity and Specificity'.

MK commented on the quality of the production and was concerned by the cost of producing RLOs. DL emphasised that this is one of the main reason for collaborating with other Universities - the cost when shared considered as price per student is very low. The RLO can be used as a linear or non-linear course of study, activities such as the breast cancer example from Specificity and Sensitivity where students can fill in a table themselves to work out percentages of Sensitivity and Specificity, this example is very specific but the coding behind it could be reused to make more general examples. AK wondered how reusable interactive items like tables really are, he saw that the table would be useful in studying plant traits and asked whether it used Java. AL explained that most of the examples were created using Macromedia Director. The different cultures within each group approaching statistics means many different approaches to the same statistical methods, therefore GLOs will have to focus on the most basic elements of statistics. TD finds text as well as narrative in the same screen to be distracting, he would like to see the text as an extra appendix that students could print off. DL emphasised that in student feedback the vast majority wished to keep both test and narrative.
